For a first timer microscope, this would be fine. The light and mirror are pretty cheap and there's not even an on and off switch. It just turns off when you twist if and turns back on when you twist it back the other way. The whole microscope is of plastic but it does come with a few basic slides of plant cells, as well as brine shrimp eggs which we didn't have any luck of them hatching. It did fuel my son's curiosity for the world around him though and he proceeded to go outside and bring in little bits of all types of random things so he could slice them down and put them on a slide. The kit also comes with dye and a tiny petri dish for the brine shrimp, as well as a very dull, cheaply made scalpel to slice objects. It doesn't work very well at all but it looks cool. For young kids I'd say this would be a lot of fun and seem real to them. For older kids, maybe not so much. I personally wouldn't buy this for anyone over the age of 9.

My daughter picked it out for her 9th birthday, and at first she was just looking at the things in the kit, but she's getting the hang of it. Yesterday she spent all day in the backyard looking at all the leaves, dirt, bark, and even dead bugs. It's a great product for sparking a child's curiosity.
I bought two as Christmas gifts , one for each of my grandsons. Its a great product and reasonably priced. With that being said, one of the microscopes was defective. Amazon’s customer service was excellent and it was quickly replaced. The replacement was also defective and way passed the return date because the boys had gone home before the replacement arrived, so we didn’t open it until they came back for the summer. I called Amazon and since it was way past, they couldn’t do anything but the representative I spoke with was very helpful in giving me the info I needed to contact the company. I called, and the person I spoke with gave me the info I needed to contact the correct person. I emailed that person and got a response within 24 hrs telling me what info I had to send, including the invoice. I didn’t have that, so back to Amazon. This rep was also fantastic and she promptly sent me a copy . I immediately sent it off to the company. Within a couple of hours of emailing the invoice, I received an email saying they were shipping the replacement within 24 hrs. Two days later I received the replacement. Great customer service, quality product, and fun while being educational.

I had one of these as a child and wanted to provide this same opportunity to learn about surrounding world for my kids. While this microscope works, I was disappointed with the manufacturing quality of the device and the kit. One of those cases where I got what I paid for. I would not recommend this model.

This item arrived in good shape and was gifted to our nephew for his 10th birthday. His mom says he and his 5 year old sister are enjoying it. They have most recently inspected one of her toenails under it, which got "eeewww"s all around...

Frankly, the set isn't very high quality. But it's perfect for sparking a child's curiosity and introducing them to scientific practices and method. Makes learning as much a creative one as a scientific one. He has ran through all the supplies in about 3 days and has been dragging in every friend and cousin he can get his hands on to check it out too.

My 13 year old son assembled it for his sister (9) before I got dinner ready. Very simple for him & they both were able to understand the instructions & look at some of the slides that were already prepared. The storage kit is a nice way to keep everything organized. Maybe myself & my brothers would have kept ours in good condition if we would have had a good case to organize it in when we were kids. Overall it is a fun product to explore the world of microscopics with.
