> Cherished by some, still a hidden treasure

In the Don’t Break the Ice game, players need to help Phillip the Penguin chop some ice blocks so he can make a new igloo. Brrrrr, that water’s cold, even for him! This game for preschoolers and kids ages 3 and up is filled with suspense as players take turns tapping out the blocks of ice. But watch out! If a player breaks the ice and Phillip falls through, they’re out! Reset the blocks to start a new round with the remaining players. The last player left who hasn’t made Phillip fall through the ice is the winner. Bring out this fun preschool game when looking for games for family game night, games for groups, and games for families and kids. Somewhat durable, very cute!!!
The only downside is that I wish the little ice hammers/picks had a round handle instead of a flat one. That is on the game developer, though, not the seller, and is all about my personal arthritic and sensory preferences. You could easily switch to a little toy hammer or gavel that has a head about the same size, if that is bothersome to you as well. Now to why I give this game FIVE STARS and recommend it wholeheartedly: I had never heard of this game until my son's occupational therapist brought it into a session. He immediately was fascinated, and did so well with patiently taking turns at the game, and waiting while she set it up, that I my throat got tight. I knew that I wanted to have this game at home. It is excellent for what is called proprioceptive input. So if you have a child that is sensory seeking, I highly recommend this game. It gives them the chance to satisfy that nervous system need for sensory input, so that they are able to be more gentle with other things that aren't literally a banging-on-things game later on. The goal of the game is that you DON'T break the ice, so with that goal in mind, it also exercises their impulse control. If you are working with your child(ren) on taking turns and waiting their turn, that is another life skill (ADL/activity of daily living) goal that can be reached in a way that satisfies the needs of their brains and nervous systems. This is also a STEM toy, in that it is a fun demonstration of how pressure works to hold things in place, just like how arches stay in place with help of a center stone. So yes, I give it all the stars and wanted to hop on here and sing the praises of this children's game. LOL

I enjoyed playing this with kids I watched as a caregiver at Church for years and wanted a copy to play with my nephews before they got too old for it. The game has changed since I last played it and it easier to set up because the frame is now one piece where before you had to snap the two sides together. The plastic ice blocks are a bit hard to fit in than I remembered but I think that's from it being new and it didn't take long before the 8 year old was able to set it up by himself - though he preferred that I do it for him. The only concerns were very minor as the penguin does not always stay plugged into the big ice block the way the older design did and sometimes falls off when hitting the blocks. The only other issue we've had is once in a while one of the legs will pop off and need to be put back on. The biggest issues is just keeping the hammers away from the kids while setting it up so they don't beat on things with them while waiting, but that's to be expected.
