The media could not be loaded. I only realized this after I bought it. The biggest pieces, queens and kings cannot hold onto the board if the board is tilted more than 45°. This is expected because the magnets are behind the wooden base of the board and the cloth like material on the pieces. I think this is expected, and the best that magnets can do. The thing I did not like much and I think that is a common theme across all kinds of magnetic chessboard is that the pieces are not securely fitted on the inside of the box. They are OK when closed but sometimes although rarely, you might need to just keep the board open with the pieces inside for decoration purpose but that won’t be possible with the board facing up. Also because the inside is black, if there is no good lighting sometimes by mistake where you are sitting, it is very hard to keep the pieces in their place, because since the pieces cannot be kept freely, it’s hard to keep them aligned in the respective places. Besides these nuances generally this board is good for a non-picky average customer if that is you. The wood material is sturdy. it’s well polished everywhere. The pieces are good. The lock is secure the magnets are good for most of the pieces except king and queen because they are tall and heavy and this board is good to be used in a car or train, etc. but not naughty kids around.

This is the second time I have purchased this chess set. The first one was a few years ago for my grandson's 7th birthday. He loves it and takes it with him to play with friends. I bought it this time for another grandson for Christmas. The pieces are kept inside and are substantial enough for small hands. This chess set makes an excellent gift. I highly recommend it.

I’m no chess expert but I have had a few sets and this is a nice one. For the price there are some minor QC issues which I consider acceptable. The finish is a little rough in spots and the pieces are a little dried out. A small amount of oil and some very fine, light sanding will make it shine like a new penny. Aside from that the 16” size is a nice compromise between the 14” and 20” sizes. Very playable but not too big for a coffee table. The pieces seem to be good quality wood. I wouldn’t pick it for traveling. The pieces are stowed in elastic loops which if you’ve ever had an old pair of underwear that’s way passed it’s expiration date them you know they will eventually wear out and even while fresh the pieces will still come loose and rattle around if handle roughly. For the home it’s perfect The build quality is very good. Everything lines up well and closes flushly. The light squares a like an inlaid veneer but it’s very handsome in use. Kudos to the children that built this!

This set far exceeded my expectations, the box is very sturdy and beautifully finished. The chess pieces are well made and good sized. This was a gift for my grandson who belongs to a chess club, he was impressed and said he got many compliments. Just buy it!
