If you live in a rural area with bad weather year round, you need this! Works great alarm goes off with severe warnings and immediate danger warnings for Hail, tornado, flooding, etc. It is a little loud and went off when I had in my room and it nearly gave me a heart attack. The down side is there is no volume control of the alert volume. Put in a place where you one sleep lol.

I do not own a cell phone. Living in northeastern MA, we typically get a few days warning of any weather issues for this area: blizzard, thunderstorm, and so on. Suddenly, this year, my state has had 7 tornados! Not normal. The first one, I got up in the morning, was busy, and did not turn on the television for an hour. When I did, I was surprised to learn there was a tornado watch for my area. Talking with friends, 3 of them had no notifications from their cell phones, and all of them thought they had it all set up. I started asking around as to how I can get warnings, being as I do not own a cell phone. Someone on a weather forum kindly explained about weather alert radios and suggested I investigate. Did my research and decided on this one. So far, I am pleased with the result. It was easy to set up, and I tend to be technically challenged, so that's a big positive right there. I've heard the beeps and learned about flash flood warnings for my area, and for a severe thunderstorm. The friends who never had any notice with their cell phones are now interested in this as well. I also like the radio, just press the button and I can listen to the forecast. Much easier than searching for the remote to turn on the television. This nicely fills the safety gap I had.

I own several of these, they have never let me down and are instrumental for early warning. I purchased this as a gift for my sons new home. No home should be without one.

Midland makes great weather radios! They are dependable and could save your life. I live in WI and while tornadoes are rare, they occur frequently enough that a simple precaution like a weather radio alert with standby/alert functions are needed. I love this unit. I programmed it to alarm for the county that I live in. I tuned in the station that I get the best reception from and I put it on standby. I hope to never hear it go off. However, the volume is more than adequate to wake me and my family when there is a tornado in the area and we need to seek shelter. This unit is perfect as it plugs in AND it has a battery backup so that if the power goes out, we still are protected!

Nicer looking than the previous generation. Much easier to set up, BUT the audio quality is noticeably inferior to the previous generation. I would strongly recommend that Midland add a speaker out jack so the customer could plug in a better quality speaker. I will be adding that jack to mine.!

The unit comes complete with a power supply. It doesn't come with batteries, but they are easy to install. The unit is very easy to set up, and quickly finds your nearest weather radio station. You can listen to the station's automated weather report at any time by pressing the button in the center of the console.
Best feature: I can select from among some fifty alerts from the National Weather Service that I apply to this part of the country and that I want to trigger the radio. This is much more specific and useful than the general "severe weather" alerts offered by systems other than the National Weather Service (NWS). Second best feature: I can select my county and, since weather around here usually moves from west-to-east, and I'm on the western edge of my county, I can select the neighboring county to the west, too. I anticipate Wednesdays, when the NWS tests the system and my radio displays an amber light. This weather and emergency alert radio has every feature for which I might ask. It beats hands-down alerts that rely on cell phone location. As tornado alley moves with climate change and as storms of all kind become more common and stronger, this radio has become more and more important. Given the purchase price, it's a great "insurance policy."

This replaced my old one, and I'm looking forward to the continued accurate forecast.
