I ordered a new copy of this book. It has a small tear in the spine. This was to be a gift but I don’t really want to give a book with a torn cover as a gift. The shipping box was not damaged nor were the other items in the box. Book in itself, though I have only glanced at it, appears to be good. The book should have been protected in plastic wrap.

Smithsonian has done a good job of depicting evolving tactical battlefield information on a single map by the use of multiple colors and narrative inserts. However, the omission of scale is without excuse. This book is clearly meant for beginning students of military history--they need an understanding of the changing size of battlefields (or as we moved into the 20th century, campaign maps). Cardinal direction should also have been added. I guess the reader just has to assume that north is at the top of the map. Experts in any area of presentation will find the narrative simplistic. As a final comment on the maps, I was disappointed by the use of an actual campaign map for Desert Storm operations. This map was hard to read, and the use of multi-color formations used for most of the maps would have served well here. I did not understand the decisions concerning including or excluding a battle. The decision to include Creasy's 15 decisive battles may make sense, but I'm not sure what drove the decision for other battles. It would have been helpful to include the Russian-Austro-Hungarian Carpathian battle in the winter of 1915, since so many student would have no idea about this aspect of the war. Space surely could have been found by removing one or more of the battles that involved British forces. The authors move from 18th century tactical battlefields to extensive operational campaigns without really commenting about this changing nature of war. Again, an expert will find this disappointing, but the book does appear to be intended for introductory readers. Don't expect too much if you are buying this book to learn anything.
The battles start with Kadesh in about1500 BC and I wondered why no bronze age battles, for example chariot battles in China. The book made that clear by noting Kadesh is the first battle with written details about the battle, and the first written peace treaty resulted from this battle. That also partly explains the western emphasis. The maps lack tactical level views such as might appeal to a simulation style of reading. The map for Midway leaves the pattern used by many of the other maps, with a historical map image. This touch of variety is pleasing. Breitenfeld was interesting as a turning point. The sequence of key battles through time is an excellent historical journey through what unfortunately tends to count the most.

Bought this as a gift, poked through it before gifting. It is interesting to look through the many historic battles and see the strategies used. The insight given really helps take it in. I would imagine that this book is more suited to someone who has an interest in the history, but is not already well versed in it. Then again I could be wrong, a well versed person might see this as a great coffee table book. I think its cool and I fall into the “someone who has an interest “ category. Hopefully today is helpful to someone.

The maps show troop movements in major historical battles and gives insights and reasoning that lead to victory and defeat. Basically explains what happened and why, something that is not always apparent. A good reference source.
